Acid Forming Foods

List of Acid Forming Foods and Their Role in Disease Creation

Acid forming foods are foods which, when eaten, the byproducts create an acidic condition in the body.  This acidic condition must be alleviated by the body to avoid acidosis and ultimately death.  (You can learn all about the Acid/Alkaline Balance and how it relates to health here: Alkalize Section.)

There are three levels of Acid Forming Foods: High Acid Forming, Medium Acid Forming and Low Acid Forming.  Levels on the Ph Scale are to the power of 10, so a Ph of 5 is 10 times more acidic then a Ph of 6.

So as you look at the list of High, Medium and Low Acid Forming foods, remember that Medium is significantly more Acid Forming then Low and High is significantly more the Medium.

Ideally, you want to only consume very small amounts of High Acid and Medium Acid foods, and balance those with Abundant amounts of Alkaline Foods.

Please note that some foods which are acidic in taste, like lemons, leave a highly alkaline waste in the body after digestion.   This is due to the alkaline mineral content and not the overall acidity of any food.   On the opposite end of the spectrum, foods like bread, which do not have an acidic flavor are highly acid forming in the body.

You can see a list of Alkaline Foods here: List of Alkaline Forming Foods.
